Nils Benson Biography
Nils Benson’s (born 1966) A View from Griffith Park is both a glimpse into one of the artist’s favorite panoramas and an homage to the Italian painter Morandi and his ephemeral paintings which captured still life and landscapes. Throughout his career, Benson has been possessed with the study of light, particularly that of the Los Angeles region. The painter’s process also alludes to the film industry and the movie sets of the past, with the layering of foreground elements against other visual clues to impart a greater sense of depth. Taken together, these modern elements, which draw on classical technique, give the painting its kinetic allure.
Benson was born in Los Angeles, where he continues to live and work, and studied at the Pacific Northwest College of Art (Portland, Oregon). Since 2015, Benson’s work has been represented by The LODGE. Benson’s work has been the part of exhibitions at institutions nationally, and internationally — most recently during LA: Night and Day @ The LODGE.
